Light + Photography
There is an intersection that connects the worlds of light and photography. Without light, it would be impossible to take a picture. Understanding how light plays on surfaces impacts how well you can take a picture as well. Having the ability to frame a scene and record how the light appears is a valuable tool.
Being a lighting designer allows me to understand the essence of light and how it works and can affect a space including the emotions. Being a photographer allows me to understand how to set up a scene with a frame to capture my surroundings. Taking photographs makes me slow down and look at my surroundings. Where the two benefit each other, is that by taking pictures I am more aware of how the light is interacting with my subject. I can then take advantage of that to get the best results. When I am working on a lighting design problem, I often will step back almost as if I am viewing it through a lens to see how the scene appears at various vantage points.
